Flibanserin Side Effects

The Price of Pleasure

With Boehringer's Flibanserin up for FDA approval this year I think it's for us consumers to closely look at and analyze the potential side effects for the drug to be marketed as Girosa or Ectris All to often consumers come rushing in for the latest fix without examining the potential for problems that could be lurking in the dark.

Latest Clinical Trial Results

While Boehringer has put Flibanserin through many trials involving over 5,000 test patients we'll focus on the latest reported results. Currently in Phase III trials testing for safety and efficacy the drug has actually done pretty well relatively speaking. Typically the laundry list of dreadful side effects is long but there have not been a lot of serious concerns with Flibanserin. Currently the major side effects reported are as follows:

  • Nausea
  • Insomnia
  • Upset Stomach
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • dry mouth
  • anxiety

That lists may seem long but it's important to look at what the effects are. Analysts are reporting that the major concern is with anxiety as it appears to be the most adverse consequence. The other thing to look at is of the 1,300 women under trial, 15 percent dropped out due to the side effects versus only 7 percent dropping out on placebo. Still sounds pretty good but are those casualties worth the potential results? That is the question the FDA will need to decide on in 2010. Considering there is large debate on whether HSDD or FSD are actually diseases or ailments requiring prescription medication and the fact that the results are not astonishing Boehringer may have a tough road on approvals.
